About Taylor and the Nerds
Taylor and the Nerds is the musical project of neuroscientist and songwriter Taylor Woodward, who blends catchy melodies with brain science to make learning fun. While studying addiction neurobiology, Taylor began writing neuroscience-themed songs like I Love You with All of My Brain, which he’s performed at concerts, conferences, and community events. He now works as a research scientist at Indiana University and continues creating music that turns complex neuroscience into accessible, educational art.

While earning his undergraduate degree in neuroscience, Taylor was also active in his local music scene, performing alone as a singer-songwriter and in groups as a member of several rock bands. He describes his college years as a strange juggling act, splitting time between classes, recording studios, and a research lab where he first became involved in addiction neurobiology.

After graduation, Taylor planned to pursue a PhD in neuroscience-a plan complicated by being rejected from every program he applied to. Undeterred, he took a job as a research technician at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver, CO, studying how anesthesia affects the brain. During this time, he continued writing music in the early morning hours and recorded his first neuroscience-themed song, Without Your Cerebellum, in 2017. The accompanying video, created with artist Spencer Olson, won an award in the Society for Neuroscience’s Brain Awareness Video Contest that year.

A turning point came when a colleague jokingly said he taught his kids to say “I love you with all my amygdala.” Taylor was amused - and inspired. He realized that loving someone involves more than just one brain region: it requires the entire brain. This insight led to the creation of I Love You with All of My Brain, a song he has performed at concerts, international conferences, and community science events in Bloomington, Indiana.

Taylor earned his PhD in neuroscience and psychology from Indiana University in 2023 and now works as a research scientist studying addiction neurobiology. Through Taylor and the Nerds, he continues to write and record catchy, educational songs that make neuroscience accessible and fun for learners of all ages.
